COURSE SUMMARY

Every 40 seconds, one person dies by suicide.  Suicide is complex and so are the solutions, but it is preventable.  Using the Core Competencies for Suicide Risk Assessment and Management (SPRC, 2006), this training is designed to foster competence and confidence necessary for professionals to perform suicide assessment and management to prevent suicide.  

OBJECTIVES

  1. Assess personal attitudes and approach in working with individuals at risk for suicide
  2. Define terms related to suicidality
  3. Articulate risk and protective factors and apply the biopsychosocial model in exploring risk factors
  4. Evaluate assessment tools and discuss strategies to elicit information
  5. Apply clinical judgment to a scenario to formulate risk 
  6. Identify the benefits of collaborative treatment and safety planning, including means reduction
  7. Learn best practices for evidenced based treatment
