COURSE SUMMARY
This lesson explores the historical roots of human trafficking, focusing on how it has been shaped by systems of racial and gender-based oppression. It examines the exploitation of marginalized communities—particularly Black, Indigenous, and Latina women—throughout history, highlighting how trafficking was once framed around "white slavery," while the trafficking of women of color was largely ignored.
By understanding this history, students will gain insight into how systemic racism and other forms of oppression continue to perpetuate trafficking today. The lesson will encourage learners to analyze the intersection of trafficking with structural inequalities and explore strategies for combatting trafficking through anti-racist and anti-oppressive approaches.
